Puerto Maldonado - Once a city built around its rubber industry, Puerto Maldonado has transformed itself into one of the most popular destinations in Peru for eco-tourism. Located in the Amazon rainforest at the confluence of the Tambopata and Madre de Dios rivers, the city serves as the main gateway from Cusco to the jungle. While the city itself does not have many tourist sites, it is an excellent starting point for trips into the rainforest.

Don’t miss…

Tambopata National Park – The Tambopata reserve is home to some of the most pristine rainforest in the world. Its ox-bow lakes are excellent places to spot the area’s varied wildlife and several macaw clay-licks in the region play host to flurries of multi-colored birds that come to feed on the nutrients found in the clay.

Lake Sandoval – A one-hour boat trip along the Madre de Dios River followed by a hike into the jungle you will find the beautiful Lake Sandoval. The area is known for its families of giant otter, black caiman and its abundance of birdlife and flora.
