Lake Titicaca -  This vast lake is situated in a region of high-altitude plateaus and plains between Bolivia and Southern Peru, known as the Puno. The endless blue expanse of Lake Titicaca was believed by the Incas to be the birthplace of all mankind and the lake is still thought to have mystical qualities by the local people. As the highest navigable lake on earth Lake Titicaca has some impressive statistics - it lies 3809m above sea level, is 120 miles long and has an average width of 40 miles. With a whole world of activity going on in and around its waters, Lake Titicaca is home to varied wildlife, including flamingoes and many types of fish, as well as a number of fascinating floating island communities built using the totora reeds that grow in the region. CAT Travel offers a range of Lake Titicaca tours through the Puno region and across the waters of this vast, high-altitude lake.

Don’t miss…

The Islands of Uros – Built using the totora reeds that grow around Lake Titicaca, these 20 or so islands are home to the Kotsuña (lake-people) whose origins date back 1000 years pre-Inca. The islanders maintain many of their traditional fishing and farming techniques to this day.

Taquile Island – This remote Lake Titicaca island is inhabited by Ayamara Indians famed for the beautiful textiles and garments that they produce. Interestingly, the knitting of these garments is done exclusively by men.

Suasi Island – The beautiful private island of Suasi is home to a luxury eco-lodge which offers visitors stunning views of Lake Titicaca in a peaceful setting where they can enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Sillustani – Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground consisting of a series of chullpas (a type of funeral tower), built by the Collas tribe that dominated the Titicaca region before they were conquered by the Incas in the 15th century.
