Puerto Madryn - The city of Puerto Madryn is located in Patagonia in the province of Chubut on the Atlantic coast of Argentina. It has an attractive beach and seafront with a wide promenade and some great seafood restaurants. The Welsh were the first to arrive in Puerto Madryn in 1865 and the city was officially founded in 1886 with the completion of a railway from nearby Trelew. Puerto Madryn lies just 70km west of the Valdez Peninsula National Park, known as a hot-spot for diverse species of marine wildlife, and a frequent destination for wildlife documentary film makers. During the spring months visitors can take whale watching boat trips from the small village of Puerto Piramides located within the national park.

Don’t miss…

The Valdez Peninsula - Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, the Valdez Peninsula is an important conservation area protecting the natural habitats of Magellan penguins, rheas, dolphins, whales, sea lions, elephant seals, orcas and more.

Whale-watching trips - Southern right whales migrate to the area from around September to early December to calf in the sheltered waters of the bays. Excursions take visitors within just a few meters of these gigantic sea creatures, which can weigh up to 55 tons.

Gaiman – This sleepy Welsh settlement bakes in the Patagonia desert plains a short drive from Puerto Madryn. Some of the inhabitants still speak their mother tongue and a selection of tea houses serve traditional afternoon teas with Welsh treats.
