You'll then head inland passing lofty volcanoes, epic canyons and high plains on route to the vast Lake Titicaca. From here it's a first-class train ride through some impressive landscapes to Cusco and Machu Picchu before heading into the Peruvian Amazon to experience the diverse flora and fauna of this vibrant jungle habitat.     Arrival in Lima

  • Upon your arrival at the International airport in Lima you will be warmly welcomed and escorted to your comfortable hotel in the capital where you will be briefed on all of your travel plans for your stay in Peru. You will then have the rest of the day free to spend at your leisure. Lima is rapidly becoming the culinary capital of Latin America, so please don't hesitate to ask your Peru Travel Expert for lunch and dinner recommendations.

    Lima Museum and City Tour

  • You will have the morning free to rest and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Later in the day you will be collected from your hotel and taken on a guided tour of the colonial city center where you will visit the Plaza Mayor, La Catedral, the Governor's Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, the Convent Church of San Francisco, and the Plaza San Martin. Afterwards you will proceed to one of Lima's art or archaeological museums. In the evening we will be more than happy to make dinner reservations for you - we highly recommend the restaurant Astrid & Gaston, rated as one of the top 100 restaurants in the world. (Meals - B) *Please Note: Travelers in Premium Service will visit either the Gold Museum or the Archeological Museum.

    The Oasis and Dunes of Huacachina

  • CAT recommends that you wear shorts and sun block today as you will be heading out of Lima into the southern sands of Peru. Premium tours will be taken to visit the ancient adobe ruins of Pachacamac and then continue on to the town of Ica. Just outside of town is the Huacachina oasis where you will be taken on a dune buggy tour of the surrounding dunes. The rest of the day will be spent at your leisure. We recommend that you pass the evening relaxing and dining at the Mediterranean style villas of the Las Dunas Hotel. (Meals - B, L)

    Mysterious Sands of Nazca

  • Following breakfast and a leisurely morning you will have an early afternoon departure to Nazca. Upon arrival you will be shown to your hotel and have some time to relax and eat before enjoying a visit to the fascinating Chauchilla Pre-Inca cemetery located 28 km South of Nazca. In addition to this excursion premium passengers will also enjoy a private visit to the Cantayoc Aqueducts.     Flight over the Nazca Lines

  • Today you will enjoy a delicious breakfast and can spend the morning either enjoying the sun beside the pool or relaxing in your hotel. In the early afternoon you may wish to arrange for your flight over the Nazca Lines accompanied by an experienced tour guide. These giant geoglyphs are something of a mystery, some claim they were designed to follow star patterns, or were created to appease the Gods. Whatever the case may be, they are a serious sight to behold especially from the window of a light aircraft a few thousand feet above. After landing and enjoying a bite to eat you will return to the hotel where you can spend the afternoon at your leisure before beginning your journey to Arequipa during the evening hours. (Meals - B, L) *** Please Note: For security purposes CAT no longer sells Nazca Lines over flights. Those willing to assume the risk will be able to book with local agencies in Nazca or Ica.
  • Day 6

    Exploring the White City of Arequipa

  • You will arrive in Arequipa in the early morning and be transferred directly to your hotel where you can catch up on some rest if need be. The remainder of the morning and lunch is free for you to rest and acclimatize. We recommend a very light lunch in your hotel as your body acclimatizes to the altitude. In the afternoon you will undertake a relaxed tour of Arequipa. The city tour is taken on foot with a private guide visiting the Santa Catalina Monastery, the Plaza de Armas, the Church of the Company, and the Church of San Francisco. You will have the rest of afternoon and evening free to spend at your leisure. You may wander around Arequipa and dine in one of its many fine restaurants. Please ask your CAT Travel Expert for dinning recommendations. (Meals - B)
  • Day 7

    Into the Colca Canyon

  • After enjoying a delicious breakfast you will be picked up and driven to the Colca Canyon, stopping for a visit at el Mirador de los Andes en route. Following your arrival in Chivay in the afternoon, you will break for lunch in the valley before taking a light guided hike into the canyon. After your hike you will visit the Medicinal Baths and Thermal Springs, where you can relax and swim before returning for dinner at the lodge. There are a handful of comfortable lodges you can select from during your stay in the canyon; CAT highly recommends the Colca Lodge.   • Day 8

    Overnight in the Colca Canyon

  • Following an early breakfast you will head back out to the Colca Canyon for further exploration. The canyon itself is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and contains many pre-Inca terracing sites. El Mirador (the Lookout) or Cruz del Condor is located on the high cliff at the deepest point of the canyon. The view here is incredible and it is a good spot from which to see the immense Andean condors soaring over the canyon. Around noon you will return to Chivay, visiting some local Andean communities on the way. You will have time for a leisurely lunch and can then spend the afternoon exploring the area at your leisure.     Out from the Canyon to Titicaca

  • Following breakfast you will be collected from your hotel for your journey to Puno and Lake Titicaca. Upon arrival you will be shown to your hotel and have the remainder of the day free to spend at your leisure. Many of our hotels in the area are on the lakeside and offer impressive views over Titicaca's deep, blue waters. CAT suggests a light dinner at your hotel this evening, but please do not hesitate to ask your CAT Travel Expert for any advice and recommendations. (Meals - B)

    The Islands of Lake Titicaca

  • Today you will head out onto the deep, blue waters of Lake Titicaca to visit the magnificent floating islands of Uros, as well as exploring the tranquil paths of Isla Taquile, an island of quaint little houses and cobblestone streets. All Class Adventure Travel customers will be provided with a personal private guide and a comfortable luxury speedboat that moves at twice the speed of the normal tourist boats on Titicaca. This gives you more time to enjoy the islands and less time baking in the sun on a long, hot boat ride. In the evening you will return to your hotel in Puno where we can make reservations (upon request) at Kero's, a charming little restaurant that has been around for quite some time. (Meals - B, L)

    The Valley between Titicaca and Cusco

  • This morning you will be picked up and taken to either the airport, or the station where you will board either a flight, or the Andean Explorer First-Class Train through the highlands to Cusco (M/W/F/Sat). Travelers in standard service arrive to Cusco by bus, with tours of Rachi, Andahuayillas, and la Raya en route. Upon arrival you will be escorted to your hotel where you will have the rest of the day free to relax and talk to your CAT Travel Expert about your travel plans over the next few days. (Meals - B, L)

    Captivating Cusco

  • The morning can be spent over a leisurely breakfast in your hotel before either exploring the area, or relaxing at your hotel. Your guided tour of Cusco and its archaeological sites will begin in the afternoon, starting with a visit to the impressive Colonial Cathedral, followed by Korikancha, the Temple of the Sun. From here you will travel to the outskirts of Cusco for a tour of the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman, later visiting the ruins of Puca Pucara, Qenqo, and Tambomachay. The evening hours will be spent at the Garcilaso Theatre, where you will enjoy a theatrical production performed by a cast of some 40 local artists (Tue-Sat). The performance offers a wonderful and culturally intriguing insight into the myths, beliefs and customs of the traditional inhabitants of the Andes. (Meals - B) *** Please Note: Ask your Travel Specialist about the possibility of including an adventure trek on the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. CAT offers options in the classic hike (4 days) or the shorter express hike (2 days)

    Through the Sacred Valley of the Inca

  • Today your guide will collect you for your visit to the Urubamba Valley. You will make your first stop at the village of Pisac and its local market (T/Th/Su). Later on, in the early afternoon, you will enjoy lunch at Posada Yucay (Standard), or the Huayocari Hacienda (Premium - hosted by the owner of a private residence with an impressive collection of Inca and colonial art and artifacts). The afternoon will be spent exploring the impressive ruins at Ollantaytambo, and the evening back at your comfortable hotel in Cusco. (Meals - B, L) **Please Note: Travelers in Premium have the opportunity to stay overnight after their private tour, then take the train from the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu in the morning - this is highly recommended.

    Encounter the Majesty of Machu Picchu

  • You will depart during the morning for your train ride through the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival at the station in Aguas Calientes, your professional guide will retrieve your luggage and escort you to your transportation to the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu that lie just a short drive from the small town. Following a guided tour of the ruins, you will have the rest of the afternoon free to explore until the sun begins to set over the beautiful Andes. Transportation is provided to the base of the mountain, where you can return to your hotel and spend the evening at your leisure. (Meals - B) **Please Note: The Premium Machu Picchu Tour is private (4 hrs); Standard is in small groups (2 hrs).

    First-Class Train back to Cusco

  • Today you can spend at your leisure, you may well wish to return to the ruins for some further exploration, or for those looking for adventure CAT recommends the hike to Wayna Picchu. This trail requires approximately 4 hours to complete, and allows for spectacular views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding areas. Your train will depart in the afternoon and arrive in Cusco just after sundown. CAT highly recommends a ride in the first class VistaDome train (Premium), which allows for a spectacular view of the scenery as you wind your way back to Cusco. For those in the mood for a little luxury, the Hiram Bingham train will definitely be of interest - just ask your Travel Specialist for further details. Upon arrival in Cusco you will be met and shown back to your hotel. This evening you may wish to dine inside the Pre Columbian Art Museum, considered to be one of the top private collections in all of Peru. We're sure it will leave you with plenty to talk about over a gourmet candlelit dinner - reservations upon request. (Meals - B)

    Out of the Andes & Into the Amazon

    Cusco to Puerto Maldonado

  • Your flight will leave at mid-day for Puerto Maldonado where you will be welcomed at the airport and escorted to the port. From here you will head up stream on the Madre de Dios River on a 45 minute boat ride to the elegant ecolodge of Reserva Amazonica. The lodge offers a range of thirteen excursions with durations of 1/4 day (2 hours), 1/2 day (3 hours), or full day (7 hours), each at different levels of intensity (I, II, III). Upon arrival at the lodge you will be able to plan your day-to-day activities in depth. A good option this evening would be to take the night walk and cruise along the Madre Dios River. All meals are included during your stay at Reserva Amazonica.   • Recommended 4 day/3 night flexible schedule: Today you will have the opportunity to get a taste of a tropical buffet breakfast following which we recommend you begin your day with a visit to the community of Rolin Island to learn about island ecosystems and visit the Primate Rescue Center. The rescue centre is home to three species of primates: the brown capuchin, the white capuchin, and the squirrel monkey. You can return to the Reserva for lunch, and then take a stroll through the tree tops on the jungle canopy walkway in the early afternoon. In the evening you can attend a presentation that will give you an overview of the Amazon rainforest before enjoying a delicious jungle dinner.     Reserva Amazonica

  • Recommended 4 day/3 night flexible schedule: On the third day of your Amazon adventure we recommend that you take a full day visit to the Tambopata National Reserve. The day will begin with a boat ride into Lake Sandoval. This is followed by a 2-hour walk through the rainforest to Concepcion farm, to reach the natural collpas (clay licks), and learn about the many rainforest mammals and birds that consume this clay. Later you will visit a botanical garden which has over 200 medicinal plants, and learn about the processes used, and benefits gained, by the traditional uses of flora. The day will come to an end as you enjoy a breathtaking canoe ride back to the lodge for dinner. (Meals - B, L, D)

    Departure or Extension

    Puerto Maldonado to Lima

  • After a filling breakfast at Reserva Amazonica and a cruise back to Puerto Maldonado, we recommend you make a visit to the Butterfly Farm. Here you will be given the opportunity of seeing many of the 3,800 species of butterflies that live in the area. Your flight will arrive back in Lima in the afternoon where a member of our staff will be waiting for you to assist you with your onward travel arrangements.
