Ica - The Ica region is a dry desert area of sweeping plains on the southern coast of Peru. Though at first glance it can appear desolate, it is in fact home to abundant sea and bird life around the Paracas Bay Reserve and the Ballestas Islands just offshore. The famous desert oasis town of Huacachina also lies in Ica province, around 5km from the capital.

Don’t miss…

The Ballestas Islands – The islands are home to over 150 species of marine birdlife, including Humboldt penguins, cormorants, boobies and pelicans. Large numbers of sea-lions can also be seen on the island’s shores, and in the surrounding water it is possible to encounter dolphins and sometimes whales.

Paracas Bay Reserve - Home to thousands of birds, including flamingos, penguins and pelicans, the reserve also offers spectacular scenery.  Established in 1975 the park is vital for the protection of both the abundant bird life, and the surrounding sea’s marine life.

Museum of Paracas Culture - As well as wildlife, the reserve is home to a museum of the Paracas culture (c.700BC) featuring fine examples of textiles and some well preserved mummies.
