Gold Museum

Gold Museum
The gold museum is the most popular museum in Lima and a central to the city’s historical attraction. The primary attraction is of course the private collection of Miguel Mujica Gallo, who spent a lifetime collecting Peruvian gold artifacts from across the country. The people of ancient Peru were renowned for their amazing metallurgy and the collection of Inca, and Pre-Inca gold and silver work contained within the museum is remarkable. Some of the artifacts are over 3000 years old and include such pieces as masks, gold figures, jewelry, head dresses, knives and others. In 2001 speculation ran rife as it was discovered that a few of the artifacts on display were fakes. The museum claimed to have purchased the said artifacts by mistake and now guarantees that all of the artifacts stored in the museum are genuine, although many conspiracy theorists remain skeptical.

Puno
Sillustani Funeral Towers (Half Day)

Sillustani Funeral Towers (Half Day)
Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground outside of Puno and consists of a number of unusual monuments in the shape of stone conical towers called Chullpas. Sillustani is only 32 kilometers north of Puno and lies on the shores of Lake Umayo. It was the Colla culture that buried their high-priests in these Chullpas, some of which are as high as 13 meters. There is a distinctive mysticism about the site and the view out and over the Chullpas on the banks of the Lake is both surreal and breathtaking. It almost looks as though long spindly fingers poke fragilely skywards through the ground. After being collected from your hotel you drive for 40 minutes before reaching Sillustani, where you will be guided around the site for over an hour before transferring back to your hotel.

Santa Catalina Monastery

Santa Catalina Monastery (Half Day Extension)
This half day extension is an add on to the tour of Arequipa included in all packages sold in the area and is perfect for lovers of colonial religious architecture and buildings. Following lunch you will resume your tour around the Santa Catalina Monastery, a complex so beautiful and intricate that it is very deserving of this half day extension tour. The Santa Catalina Monastery is loosely described as a walled city within a city and boasts some of the finest colonial architecture in South America. The monastery contains over a hundred houses, 60 streets, a main square, a church, and a cemetery, and all are quaintly designed in architecture reminiscent of Andalusia. Completely closed to the outer world, the monastery housed hundreds upon hundreds of nuns who lived there during the 17th, 18, and 19th centuries. The Monastery only opened its doors in 1970, until which time the goings on within it were a complete mystery to the outside world, and only those in the order were permitted to enter. Even though the monastery is now open to the general public it remains in a world and time of its own – an ancient heart that still beats in the modernizing city of Arequipa.

Also known as the Puka Tampu complex, this site lies about 33 kilometers down the Libertadors highway and is the largest Inca site on the Peruvian coast. A number of different ancient buildings make up the complex with the northern part being best preserved. This section consists of a large quadrangular building subdivided into numerous chambers and passageways. The presence of red clay used in the adobe construction of the complex gives the site an appealing reddish yellow glow as well as its name ‘Tambo Colorado’. The Inca culture that resided in the area reported directly to the Empire and the remains of the temple, the barracks and the palace can all still be easily seen. Huaytará

Huaytará
A 45 minute drive south of Paracas and Pisco brings one close to Ayacucho and the archaeological site of Huaytará, one of the most visually appealing Inca buildings in the area. The Spanish conquistadores built the Church of San Juan Bautista upon Huaytará, which while being rather sad, does present a marvelous exposition of both Pre-Columbian and colonial architecture. Inca stone masonry was extraordinary and the stone work on the building of Huaytará is particularly fascinating. Archaeologists still dispute the function of the Huaytará, some believe it to have been the palace of a high ranking Inca, and others believe it to have been a temple of the sun. Following the tour around the complex you will proceed to Incawasi which lies roughly minutes away from Huaytará. Incawasi is an old site that has seen the passage of time slowly crumble its walls. The buildings that have withstood the weather and the passage of time are a testament to Inca architecture. Following your tour you will return to Paracas.

Chauchilla, Aqueducts and Paredones

Chauchilla, Aqueducts and Paredones
This tour starts early as temperatures during the day can get really hot. The cemetery of Chauchilla is intriguing and located out in the middle of the desert it’s a wonder how the Nazca culture managed to survive in the area for so long. Mummies can be seen amidst some fading ruins, ancient textiles, and an arid landscape scattered with human bones, all of which seem impervious to both time and the relentless heat of the sun. It has been speculated that over 400 tombs were built in the area with over 1000 corpses buried among them. Looters have in the past raided much of the site although the mummies and many of the artifacts remain. The graveyard is about 30 minutes away from Nazca by car and following your tour around the area you will head towards the Aqueducts of  Cantalloc where you will discover how the Nazca people managed their water in such a dry climate. Paso Horseback Riding – Salinas, Maras, Moray

Moras Moray Paso Horseback Riding
The horseback riding experience to Salinas, Maras, and Moray is a rewarding expedition for the more skilled of riders. A reasonably good physical condition is advised for this excursion as the route is long and can be strenuous. Leaving Cusco you cross the Urubamba River and climb a pass to the altiplano. Upon reaching 1000 meters you cross the altiplano and head towards the Salinas, a fascinating system of platforms used since the Inca times to extract salt from a natural mountain spring. Visually the shining salt-encrusted terraces are extraordinary. Continuing on route you will be lead uphill to an altitude of approximately 3700 meters where you will level off to find spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains of Chicon, Veronica, and Mount Salcantay. The horse trail then leads down to Maras, a typical Andean village that is home to a beautiful 400 year colonial old church and has some breathtaking salt mines on its outskirts – the sight of which looks like a giant patchwork quilt of different shades of white, ochre, and red slung lazily over a hillside. Following a brief guide of the salt mines you will be lead onwards to Moray which used to function as an agricultural experimentation laboratory during the times of the Inca. Concentric terraces make stepped platforms descending in a theater like manner. Whitewater Rafting in the Sacred Valley
You will be collected from your hotel early in the morning and transported to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. In Pachar you will meet with your instructor who will give a safety talk, outline the route down river, describe each of the rapids, and introduce you to the equipment. You will then begin practicing on some flatter safer areas of the river before the rafting experience begins in earnest. You begin by following the mighty Urubamba downstream, passing Ollantaytambo and some stepped Inca terraces before hitting the first rapids. The early section consists of Class II and III rapids. Later you pass over El Respaldero – a strong Class III rapid that gets the adrenaline rushing. Following the final rapid you reach the lunch spot where you can share some food, a few tales, and perhaps a cold beer with some other adventure rafters. Following lunch you are transferred back to your hotel in Cusco.
