Santiago de Chile - Santiago is the capital of Chile and its largest city. Through lofty tower blocks you can see the magnificent mountain ranges that encircle the city, a spectacular backdrop to a modern and dynamic metropolis. Like its fellow capital, Buenos Aires, Santiago boasts a diverse population and, as such, its character is both distinctively Chilean and unmistakably cosmopolitan. Founded by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia in 1541, the Spanish fought off decolonization attempts from local Indians but, by the end of the century, had the city secured. When independence was declared in the 19th century, Santiago became increasingly important to Chile and many of the Chilean élite migrated towards the city, building mansions and expanding its boundaries. Today Santiago is the 5th biggest city in South America and boasts a vibrant cultural scene with a wealth of museums. A thriving café culture is complimented by Santiago’s many striking, leafy parks, making afternoon strolling a must. The mountains that surround it aren’t just décor, either. There are many outdoor activities to be enjoyed, all with fantastic views of Chile’s capital city, Santiago.

Don’t miss…

Plaza de Armas – The heart of Santiago is in its leafy main square, Plaza de Armas. The city’s rebuilt main cathedral sits next to the skyscrapers that overlook the square, perfectly capturing the combination of old and new that so characterizes Santiago.

Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino – One of Chile’s best museums, the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino houses an unrivalled collection of exhibitions that focus on the Pre-Colombian cultures of the Andes.

Mercado Central – Santiago´s central market is a hive of activity, selling all manner of fresh fruit and fish, and offering some of the best lunch opportunities in the city.

La Chascona – In the heart of the Bellavista neighborhood you will find La Chascona, the house which was once home to Chilean poet and national icon, Pablo Neruda. The house is now a colorful memorial to one of the most important literary icons of this century.
