San Pedro de Atacama - San Pedro de Atacama is a small oasis town in the middle of some of northern Chile’s most spectacular landscapes - a barren, rocky desert punctuated by weird, moon-like rock formations, steaming geysers and an active volcano. The small town is situated at around 2435m above sea level, between the high plains of the altiplano and the desert. It has been in existence since pre-Inca times when it’s strategic position facilitated trade between the isolated highland farmers and the fishing communities of the coast. Today its attractive network of streets lined with adobe buildings caters mostly to the needs of the many tourists who visit each year. The wealth of interesting sites to visit nearby and opportunities for a range of adventure sports keep visitors busy, and the town has a well set up tourist infrastructure.

Don’t miss…

Salar de Atacama – The Atacama salt flats are the largest in Chile and cover an area of 3000km2. Ringed by volcanoes and dotted with flamingo frequented lakes, they are a true sight to behold.

El Tatio Geysers – This high-altitude geyser field has dozens of active geysers and sits at a height of about 4300m.

Valle de la Luna – The weird and wonderful rock formations of Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) are not to be missed. This landscape of eroded salt mountains is especially impressive, and photogenic, at sunset.
