Lençois - The well-preserved colonial town of Lençois in the northern interior of Brazil was founded in the 19th century when diamonds were first discovered in the area. The story goes that when the prospectors first arrived they set up tents on the hillsides, which were said to look like sheets drying in the wind - or to give them their Portuguese name ' Lençois' - and this is where the town got its name.  As more and more hopeful prospectors poured into Lençois these initial settlements grew into villages that linked up to eventually become a large town. Mining has continued on a small scale in Chapada Diamantina, but with strict rules enforced regarding excavation techniques. The main source of income now revolves around tourism, showcasing the area’s outstanding natural beauty in the nearby Chapada Diamantina National Park.

Don’t miss…

Chapada Diamantina National Park – With striking, flat-topped plateaus surrounded by huge sweeps of lush forested valleys, sparkling rivers and waterfalls, the dramatic scenery of the Chapada Diamantina National Park is simply stunning.

The town - Lençois itself has a lovely quiet charm and is a great base from which to head out and explore during the day, and relax during the evening. With cobbled streets and brightly painted houses set against a backdrop of rolling green hills, it is a picturesque and relaxing place to stay.
