Ilha Grande - Ilha Grande is located around 150km southwest of Rio de Janeiro and is the archetypal tropical island paradise. The island's dense Atlantic rainforest nurtures varied plant and animal wildlife and its clear waters are home to an array of corals and tropical fish. In order to protect these precious habitats, development on Ilha Grande has been halted and there are no roads or cars. The isolation of Ilha Grande meant that centuries ago it was used as a leper colony and later as a prison. Due to this somewhat dark history it took some time for the island to be settled. This slow progress helped to make Ilha Grande what it is today - one of the most well-preserved natural habitats in Brazil. Trails cross the island, winding through pristine jungle, past crystal clear waterfalls to deserted tropical beaches.

Don’t miss…

The beaches - Ilha Grande has literally dozens of beautiful beaches, among them is Praia de Lopes Mendes. Accessible only by boat or a hike through the jungle, this is the crown jewel of Ilha Grande’s beaches and is thought by many to be the best in Brazil.

Nature walks - The true beauty of a visit to Ilha Grande lies in the tranquility of spending time in an un-spoilt paradise far away from the trappings of the modern world. Days spent wandering the island's jungle trails and relaxing on deserted beaches are what it's all about.

Water-sports - There are options for all kinds of water-sports around Ilha Grande, including sailing, kayaking, rowing, scuba diving, snorkeling and surfing.
