SALVADOR

|
| Dinner and Bahia by Night Show |
The nightly folkloric show takes place in the old stockrooms of an 18th Century sugar mill, Solar do União, which had its own church, manor house and slaves quarters. It is a spectacular showcase of Candomblé (the religious ritual that originated in Nigeria); Manculelê (a stick and sword dance from the cane fields); Dance of the Caboclo (a hunting dance of the indigenous people); Capoeira (the dance of self-defense adapted by slaves from an Angolan martial art); and Samba de Roda (a spinning, swirling version of the exuberant national dance).

| Cachoeira and Sugar Plantation Tour |
The full day tour to the colonial city of Cachoeira picks you up from your hotel after an early breakfast and takes you through the fertile farmland on the western side of All Saints Bay. The interior here is a land of sugar plantations, busy country markets and peaceful little colonial towns in rural Brazil. The first stop is Santo Amaro, with its market and 17th Century church. The tour continues through valleys of rolling hills to Cachoeira, set in a deep valley alongside the River Paraguaçu. A walking tour of the town takes in baroque churches with beautiful painted frescoes, the old town hall and jail, and the stores of wood-carvers from the area. Candomblé has strong roots in the town too, and signs of the rituals can be seen everywhere. Across the river in São Felix, the Dannemann Cultural Centre produces Brazil’s finest cigars, which you can see being rolled in the same style as when the center opened in 1873. Lunch is included.

The full day tour takes you to the paradise beaches of Praia do Forte, a tiny old fishing village 80km north of Salvador along the Coconut Highway. The beaches are some of the best in Bahia, with white sand, tall green palm trees and turquoise seas. The off-shore reef keeps the waters warm and allows them to warm up in the sun, making it easy for everybody to swim and snorkel with fish amongst the coral. The delightful village also has boutiques and restaurants, a tiny church and a lighthouse. The area is also famous for its turtle sanctuary which protects the eggs of hundreds of sea turtles that come to the beaches of the area and lay around 80 eggs each during nesting season (Sep to Mar). Praia do Forte also has a reserve of Atlantic Rainforest with monkeys, macaws and hummingbirds regularly seen from the trails through the forest. Lunch is included.

| Morro de São Paulo Tour |
The full day tour takes you to Morro de São Paulo, a beautiful little historic town on the northern tip of Ilha do Tinharé, a paradise island 80km south of Salvador. The island has no cars on its sandy roads, giving a wonderful relaxed atmosphere to the stylish boutiques and the paradise beaches. The town was built at the convergence of three small hills, the first of which has a lighthouse and the ruins of an old fort. At the bottom of the second hill are beaches with bars and restaurants amongst the palm trees, and crystal clear water in the tide pools formed by the reef. You can walk or ride a horse further along the beaches, which get progressively longer and quieter but are all beautiful. There are many activities that you can do on Morro de São Paulo, but the atmosphere of the island town means that it is impossible not to relax! Lunch is included. Longer stays on the island are also easy to organize.
