La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, looks like a moon crater. The city is 4km above sea level and is situated on a canyon floor which shows only a hint of greenery. Fortunately, the life and color of La Paz is found in its people and culture, not its landscape. La Paz is considered to be the synthesis of Bolivia because it contains in one way or another all the various forms of climate of the country, and it has an enormous variety of natural attractions, such as high snowy mountains, the Andean landscape, deserted areas and sub-tropical areas.
The sacred and mystic Lake of the Inca is the highest navigable lake in the world. This magical lake harbors in its breast the archaeological complex of one of the oldest civilizations on the continent. Lake Titicaca is located in the Department of La Paz, three hours by bus from the capital city. It has an average height of 3,810 meters above the sea level. A portion of the lake belongs to Bolivia and the other one to Peru.
Sucre is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and it preserves the essence of a splendid past. In August of 1825, the members of the Deliberating Assembly met in this welcoming Andean village, to proclaim the independence of the country.
Declared Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO, Sucre -capital of the department of Chuquisaca- is a small place in perpetual serenity. Inspiring, discreet and wrapped in an intellectual halo, the city is a haven for young students from across the country.
During the colonial time, the silver extraction in the Cerro Rico of Potosi, transformed this city into the biggest in America with more than 160,000 inhabitants; The city thrived on opulence and exquisite churches and elegant mansions were built and conspicuous architects and celebrated artists arrived. People say that with the silver extracted from the bowel of the Cerro Rico or Sumaj Orcko (Majestic Mountain), it could have been possible to build a gigantic bridge to connect Potosi with Madrid; but, they also say that this fabulous work could have been made with the bodies of the enslaved natives that died in the tunnels.
Exuberant vegetation makes up the territory of the department of Santa Cruz de la Sierra located in the oriental part of Bolivia. Its capital – Santa Cruz – was founded in 1561 by the Spanish captain Ñuflo de Chávez. A prosperous thriving city, Santa Cruz has become the economic heart of the country.
Southwest of Bolivia, over 3,600 meters above the sea level, with a vast extension of 10,582 Km2, lies the brightest spot visible from space, the amazing Salar de Uyuni.
Another planet to discover, the largest white desert in the world seems to expand itself until it blends with the sky. One can also find peaceful and friendly authentic towns locked inside this unusual landscape.
This area is located north of Bolivia, the Bolivian Amazon, extends all across these three Bolivian Departments: Beni, La Paz and Pando, the third one has the largest extension of the Amazon. The entire Amazon has kept its raw and savage nature, and most of the indigenous tribes continue to live under the same conditions as they did in the past in their ancestral habitat.
