Mendoza - CAT Travel’s Mendoza tours take you to the wine-growing region of Mendoza in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Mendoza was founded in 1561 by Pedro de Castillo and over the following centuries the pre-Columbian water systems built by the Huarpe indigenous tribe of the region facilitated agricultural growth and wine-growing around the city. After an earthquake destroyed most of the city in 1861 it was rebuilt with quake-proof buildings, wide tree-lined boulevards and attractive plazas. Today Mendoza is known for its surrounding vineyards, its laidback charm and its excellent cuisine.  Its proximity to the mountains also makes it a great base for skiing in the winter months and hiking during summer.

Don’t miss…

Wine-tasting tours - The region surrounding the city of Mendoza is responsible for 70% of Argentina’s wine output and produces world class vintages of Malbec and Cabernet, as well as some excellent sparkling white wines. Most vineyards open their doors to welcome visitors, offering tours and tastings as well as gourmet cuisine with wine pairings.

Parks and plazas - The city of Mendoza itself has a charmingly relaxed pace of life and is built around the main Plaza Independencia, from where wide boulevards lead off to other smaller plazas. Mendoza’s plazas, along with its many parks, are very pleasant to walk through of an afternoon.

The Andes – The snowcapped peaks of the Andes offer a beautiful backdrop to a day touring the vineyards around the nearby Uco Valley.  During the winter months the Las Lenas ski resort is one of the most popular in Argentina.
