Jujuy - High in the Andean puna close to the Bolivian border, Jujuy city is the capital of the northern province of the same name. This is one of the few regions in Argentina where the indigenous culture is still strong, and there is also a thriving local folk music scene. The city is lively and bustling with a few interesting examples of colonial architecture and a colorful market. Founded in 1593 between two rivers, the city sits in a richly wooded valley between the mountains, making for some beautiful views. The nearby Andean landscapes are stunning, and Jujuy is a perfect base from which to head out and explore the desert plains and cloud forests of the region.

Don’t miss…

The Quebrada de Humahuaca – This long craggy gorge leads through Jujuy province to Bolivia and has some of the most stunning scenery in northern Argentina. Terracotta cliffs with multicolored strata in shades of pink, ochre and green stretch into the distance and the arid landscape is dotted with giant cacti.

Historic villages – The Quebrada de Humahuaca is dotted with small historic villages dating back to the 18th century, many of them made up of squat, white adobe buildings built around a central church.

The Mountain of Seven Colors – Rising up dramatically behind the small village of Purmamarca, this multi-colored mountain displays at least seven colors of stratified rock, ranging from delicate pinks and deep mauves to burgundy and green.
