Population:

Approximately 40 million.

Capital:

The first settlement of Buenos Aires was founded in 1536 by the Spanish aristocrat Pedro de Mendoza, however this first attempt failed due to bad organization and a lack of agricultural know-how. A second, and successful, attempt was made by Juan de Garay in 1580. Today the population is approximately 13 million.

Official languages:

Spanish. There are also 15 indigenous languages spoken around the country, as well as some German and a small amount of Welsh.

Principal Exports:

Agriculture, food processing, motor vehicles, consumer durables, textiles, chemicals and petrochemicals, printing, metallurgy, steel.
