Bariloche - This medium sized town is beautifully situated in the Patagonia Lake District in the foothills of the Andes. Surrounded by dramatic landscapes of towering mountains and vast, glassy lakes, the town is an ideal base from which to explore the area, which offers opportunities for skiing in winter and horseback riding, cycling, hiking and rafting in summer. The roots of present day Bariloche lie in the German and Swiss settlers who came over from Chile in the early twentieth century. Bariloche is famous for its German and Swiss heritage, which can be seen in the alpine architecture and in its culinary output, which includes local brewed beers, smoked game and chocolate.

Don’t miss…

Nahuel Huapi National Park – One of the most beautiful national parks in all of Argentina, Nahuel Huapi around Bariloche offers breathtaking views and a wealth of hiking trails of varying levels.

Otto Mountain – Offering spectacular views of the area, the summit of Cerro Otto can be reached by cable car where a rotating restaurant provides magnificent views of soaring snow-capped peaks as far as the eye can see.

Arrayanes National Park – Located on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapí, this national park can be reached by boat from Bariloche. This is one of the few places in the world where the myrtle tree can be found, and some of the beautiful cinnamon colored trees of the forest are as much as 300 years old.

Villa la Angostura - This small village has more of a close-knit feel than Bariloche and has recently become a popular, up-market destination amongst wealthy Argentines. The village is a good base from which to explore the surrounding countryside, and provides a tranquil setting in the heart of the national park.
