Puerto Maldonado and Into the Jungle |
Upon your arrival at the airport in Puerto Maldonado you will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to the port. Here you board motorized canoes and begin your journey deep into the heart of the Jungle, the mighty Madre de Dios. The boat ride lasts roughly four hours and lunch is served en route. While being comfortable, the journey also provides great photographic opportunities of both sides of the river as you pass down it. The last part of the trip is down a much wilder river with some truly virgin rainforest that makes up the border between Peru and Bolivia. Upon arrival at the Heath River Wildlife Center you will be greeted, shown your accommodation, and given a brief tour around the center. After enjoying your first jungle lodge meal you will be given the rest of the evening to spend at your leisure. (Meals – L, D)
*Please note that as the Lodge is located on the Bolivian side of the HeathRiver, passports (and Bolivian visas if necessary) are required in order to clear Bolivian passport control. |

Heath River Lodge and the Clay-lick |
After an early rise, you will be guided to the Heath River Wildlife center’s personal Macaw and parrot clay-lick. This is close to the center and only takes a few minutes to reach by motorized canoe. Amid blurs of rouge feathers and extravagant squawks, thousands of brightly colored parrots and macaws flurry to the clay-lick each morning. It is thought that the clay makes up an important part of their diet. A specially designed blind allows you to get incredibly close to the birds without being noticed. It is behind these blinds that breakfast is served. After returning to your lodge you will undertake a guided ethno-botanical walk through the forest surrounding the lodge. Your guide will point out all of the different plants and each of their medicinal properties, as well as the many different uses the jungle residents have for each plant. Following a delicious lunch, you will be led to the Pampas del Heath which is said to be the largest undisturbed Savannah area in the Amazon. The experience of walking out of the dense rainforest and onto a Savannah like plain is both breathtaking and unforgettable. Following the tour you will return to the Lodge and be given the evening to spend at your leisure. (Meals – B, L, D) |

Once again you will rise early in order to enjoy breakfast at the clay-lick. Make sure you bring your camera as this is the last day you will have to visit the extraordinary parrot spot. Following breakfast you will return to the lodge where you will be given the opportunity to explore some of the trails around the Center. Many of these trails are beautiful and take you through some extraordinary parts of the Amazon. It is not uncommon to spot wildlife such as Capybaras and occasionally Jaguars, on these walks. Following lunch at the Lodge you will be lead on a visit to the Ese’eja community of Sonene. Here you will learn more about the lifestyle of a Jungle Community and will be given the opportunity to interact with many of the residents. It is possible to buy local curios and handicrafts here. It is also possible to explore the jungle trails that surround the community. In the evening you will return to the Lodge and after a filling farewell dinner you will be given the opportunity to undertake a guided tour of the jungle at night with a flash-light.
